About Michael

THE STORY

“The explanation was almost never as simple as getting better. It was regaining access to their potential under pressure.”

MICHAEL ALLISON

I’ve spent more than twenty-five years working with people who were highly capable and often accomplished, yet struggled to access their potential when the stakes were highest. Athletes, executives, surgeons, academics, stage performers, parents.

It started with training athletes. I watched them consistently perform well in practice or in the gym, yet struggle in competition. It became clear that the difference between their potential and their performance wasn't simply a matter of skill, preparation, or effort. We often explain this separation in terms of mindset, grit, focus, and determination. But the more I explored this gap, the more I recognized the role our physiological state was playing in what became available to us.

In a culture built on competition, comparison, and evaluation, we’re taught to keep developing our skills, knowledge, and abilities, with the promise that achievement will eventually relieve the pressure. But the pressure often grows with each new accomplishment. And even as our capacities expand, access to them can narrow as the stakes rise. This integral part of the performance equation remains largely overlooked and undertrained.

I help high achievers recognize and respect the influence of their physiological state, and develop the agility to skillfully guide their state to access the capacities they need when it matters most. Not to eliminate pressure or stop pursuing meaningful goals, but to discover how we can achieve under pressure without losing access to connection, creativity, collaboration, and play.
